| Beaver | Haram — extracted from the castor sacs of beavers |
Castoreum is a secretion from the castor sacs of beavers, used as a flavoring agent that mimics vanilla, raspberry, and strawberry flavors. While rare in modern food production (due to cost and availability), it can legally be listed under 'natural flavors' in the US. Most scholars consider it haram as beavers are not halal animals.
Almost never listed by name on food labels. May be hidden under 'natural flavors' or 'natural flavoring'. Extremely rare in modern food production.
