| Source | Halal Ruling |
|---|---|
| Lanolin Sheep Wool | Halal — derived from sheep's wool oil (lanolin), most common source. Sheep does not need to be slaughtered |

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is most commonly produced from lanolin, a waxy substance extracted from sheep's wool. Since wool is obtained without slaughtering the sheep, most scholars consider lanolin-derived D3 halal. Fish liver oil-derived D3 is also halal. Some D3 may come from pork skin. Lichen-derived D3 is a newer plant-based source. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is always plant-derived and halal.
